About the Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of British Columbia

The Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of British Columbia is a volunteer-driven agency dedicated to helping people help themselves and others deal with crisis. The Crisis Centre was founded in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1969 and offers local and provincial services geared towards saving lives and building healthy communities.

There are three main programs at the Crisis Centre offered free to the public:

  • The Community Education Program – This program sends trained volunteers to high schools around the region to facilitate interactive workshops with classes aimed at teaching students to use their own strengths to help their friends overcome suicidal feelings. The Reaching Out video is used as part of the workshops.
  • The 24/7 Distress Line – This service offers confidential, non-judgmental support to people of all ages who are trying to overcome all kinds of problems. The Distress Line has a translation service for More than 140 languages and dialects to ensure people from all communities can get help.
  • YouthInBC.com – This groundbreaking website is an internet hotline for youth in distress. Young men and women between the ages of 12 and 29 get confidential, non-judgmental support through live, one-on-one chats with our trained volunteers. Youth can also get help through email. And the site contains information and links to services for a wide range of issues

The Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of BC is accredited by the American Association of Suicidology. It is a member agency of the United Way and is affiliated with the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention, the Distress Line Network of BC, the BC Crisis Line Association, the Canadian Association of Gift Planners and Leave A Legacy BC.
