About the Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of British Columbia

The Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of British Columbia is a volunteer-driven agency dedicated to helping people help themselves and others deal with crisis. The Crisis Centre was founded in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1969 and offers local and provincial services geared towards saving lives and building healthy communities.

There are three core programs at the Crisis Centre offered free to the public:

  • The Community Education Program – Builds community awareness and skills in suicide prevention and crisis intervention.  We provide training and education to persons-at-risk, along with professionals and other community members.   The Reaching Out video is part of our youth program where trained volunteers facilitate interactive workshops aimed at encouraging youth  recognize and respond to a friend or peer who may be suicidal and be empowered to reach out for help.
  • The 24/7 Distress Phone Services –Offers confidential, non-judgmental support to people of all ages who are feeling distress or despair.
  • YouthInBC.com – A web-based hotline for youth, where troubled teens can connect with caring volunteers for private real-time online chats, obtain email support from professional staff, and access useful resources and information on youth mental health issues such as self-harm and suicide

The Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of BC is accredited by the American Association of Suicidology. It is a member agency of the United Way and is affiliated with the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention, the Distress Line Network of BC, the BC Crisis Line Association, the Canadian Association of Gift Planners and Leave A Legacy BC.
